A New Life

Our little cherub, Evan arrived on May 15. Baby is happy and healthy (and already looks like a 1-month old!) Mama (healing from a not-so-simple delivery) and Dad are overwhelmed, exhausted, and elated. Life already feels very different. Welcome to the family, little guy. There are so many beautiful things on this precious planet that we can't wait to show you.

A Happy Kitchen

One of my favorite spaces in our small bungalow is the happy little yellow kitchen. It's nothing fancy but I love the mid-century modern feel and the light in the space is always so pleasant - even on rainy days. You cannot help but be cheerful when you enter the room to make your morning cup of coffee. From the adjacent dining space, one can look out at the garden and ocean through the glass doors (sunsets are beautiful!) This first image is not the sharpest but it offers a general idea of the room's atmosphere (tea towel by Mengsel Design). I have some of my own photographs hanging on the walls in this area of the house, including my Persimmon print (last image).

Mothers and Memories

I will be a mother any day now. In the past few weeks, I've been thinking more and more about my own mother and how special she is. As Mother's Day approaches (May 8th in the US), I want to share some images of my favorite woman before my life turns into a whirlwind of new experiences and responsibilities that she endured with such grace. This photograph of my mother with me (her firstborn) is my favorite. It has seen lots of wear and tear over the years as it traveled from continent to continent several times.

As I get older, family photographs are infused with greater meaning each time I take them out to examine them. I love photography - it is a passion. Photography that documents a family's life is so layered and meaningful. I will be exploring this more closely as my family journey begins and feel that it is a great responsibility. Here, this image of my mother in a garden setting in Mozambique when she was pregnant with me, holds so much power because I now know what it means to be carrying a child, and how tough it is to look this lovely at the same time! She had the cutest legs and great sense of style.

What I value most about my mother is her ability to accept anyone, to have true compassion and see the good in anyone she encounters. She delights in finding serenity and loves to laugh. Her sense of humor is without censorship - she is not easily offended. I honor her spirit now more than I ever have, fully understanding how much she has done to shape me, and hoping to carry her best qualities with me into my role as mother. I love this photograph of her, so carefree and relaxed (with a naughty cigarette in hand!) The years that followed were going to be particularly trying for her. It's still such a marvel to me that we can capture a moment and a feeling forever with the gift of photography.

As I embark on my journey to photograph my own little family, I hope to be a successful storyteller - to embrace the "refuse to say cheese" philosophy of photographer Me Ra Koh and the expressive style of the talented photographers of Shutter Sisters. Wishing all mothers a special Mother's Day, and all daughters an awakening that deepens your understanding and appreciation of the woman who gave you life.

I'm 38 weeks pregnant now (home stretch - yay!). I feel enormous and looking forward to some form of relief once the baby arrives (although I'm sure there will be new discomforts to contend with after delivery). I was hesitant to post this personal pic but here goes - big baby on the way!

Spring Awakening

Just stopping in with a few botanical beauties (found on my recent walks with the mutt) to celebrate the season. Even though my preggers belly is unwieldy and my discomforts are many (my feet and ankles are so swollen - they look like Shrek's feet!), I am still able to appreciate all the gifts in my life these days. I've been enjoying the wonderful Discovery Channel series, Human Planet. It's so interesting to see how people live outside of the society we're accustomed to in the West. They get by with a lot less but also lead such difficult lives. The show has helped me be more mindful of common aspects of my daily life that are easy to take for granted, like electricity, easy access to food, water and clothing - basically, everything that (sadly) becomes precious in our society only after a disaster of some kind. It's been a while since I added new items to the shop. The third trimester of pregnancy has not been my most productive period in terms of shopkeeping and blogging. The efficiency has been concentrated in the "nesting" area of my life as I approach my due date (just a few weeks away!). I really love these pieces and have been eager to add them, however. I am not without inspiration these days - simply lacking in energy. ;)

Soothing Etsy Treasury

It's always a pleasure to receive a note from a fellow Etsy-an about my work being included in a treasury. Although I'm always appreciative, I believe some folks are naturally gifted at selecting a tasteful collection of items - and those treasury makers are rare. There are few that truly understand color harmony, the importance of selecting items that are photographed well, and finding an assortment of items that represent as many categories as possible from the huge variety of products for sale on Etsy. Here's an example of one that I really loved seeing today (featuring my print, 'Sea of Succulents'). Mmmm. Refreshing.

I'm so entranced by the detail in the botanical and natural history work of the talented graphic designer and illustrator, Sasha Prood. I love her portfolio web site that includes examples of her handmade typography and pattern design work. She styles her images beautifully, too. Photography Inspiration: André Paul Pinces

Vancouver-based commercial photographer and filmmaker, André Paul Pinces has a background in printmaking and visual communications, and has studied under the likes of Warhol photographer Christopher Makos. Pinces' beautiful photographs below are from a campaign for DACE (lovely, flowy, classic – a bit above my price point - clothing). Although fashion photography is rarely of interest to me (I prefer images without human subjects for the most part), these serene and moody pieces really speak to me. A Room of One's Own

Virginia had it right - women thrive when they have a room of their own - a little nook, an official private space for creating and recharging. I've been fortunate to have a home office that serves my tech needs but also doubles as a craft space. I'm surrounded by things I love. As I prepare for the arrival of our little one, however, this space will become a nursery. To preserve the memory of this spot in the house that has brought me so much comfort, I'm sharing a few images of it before the baby invasion. There is no doubt that my little boy will be my greatest achievement and I gladly offer up the space for him, but someday I hope to resurrect my humble little studio where I can create in solitude and display my favorite things again.

The poster above my desk is by the very talented Alice Melvin. Here's a closer look below. The wooden frame is stained a dark green color.

Below, a snapshot of a small area of my office bookcase - the original horse illustration in calligraphy ink was purchased at a Paris stationery shop; the owl photograph is by Allison Trentelman; the tiny canvas prints are by Tush Tush. I'm a bit obsessed with illustration - especially children's book illustration. My collection keeps growing. I guess I won't run out of good reads for the little bird. ;)

My inspiration board features a lot of my own photographs because each one reminds me of a place and time that I'd like to cherish. The postcards also have special meaning to me.

I am in full pregnant girl nesting mode these days. In my search to find inspirational art I can live with for a long time - and dress up a few walls in need of love, I have become very enamored of the work of two talented painters. Holly Ward Bimba is a Virginia-based watercolor artist with a flare for natural history. I'm partial to botanical illustration so her pieces had instant appeal for me. The earthy tones and natural subjects make for very soothing wall decor. She sells original work exclusively in her lovely Etsy shop. See my favorites below. I recommend a visit to her beautiful blog where you can catch a glimpse of her latest pieces and enjoy her gorgeous photography.

I'm also really loving several pieces by local Bay Area artist, Clare Elsaesser of Tastes Orangey. I purchased this sewn print recently (first image below) and love the added texture of the stitching. I think her pieces featuring people in repose are perfect for a bedroom. She has a great blog, too. I love to learn more about artists, their process, and their inspiration via their blogs, don't you?

Holiday Reflection

Are you enjoying the holiday season? I have mixed feelings about this time of year. The season is a time of reflection, gratitude, and quality time with your loved ones (sadly, my parents, siblings and extended family live in Europe and Africa) but for so many the season is about blind consumption, excess and waste. My personal wish for this year (aside from a healthy baby) is that more people will develop an awareness of their impact on our planet and realize that every buying decision we make has an effect on the environment as well as other people around the world. We're pretty sheltered from the visual signs of the damaging effects of our rubbish and irresponsible purchases, aren't we? Consider local, handmade, recycled, sustainable, secondhand and simple - and find true peace this year.

I had a quiet, grateful Christmas. My husband made a generous donation on my behalf to the wonderful Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Somaliland. The hospital helps curb the high rate of infant and maternal mortality in the region by providing much-needed prenatal and postpartum care and education for women and children. As an African-born mother-to-be, this moved me to tears and I couldn't have asked for a better, more thoughtful gift - or husband!

Here's a peak at our little tree. I like the calming effect of using only silver, white and glass ornaments. Pardon the grainy night shot. The tree just isn't the same by day. ;)

I purchased this lovely garland for our mantel from artist, Carrie Strine. I'm looking forward to many more holiday seasons with this pretty handmade item.

To our simple, fresh wreath, I added handmade reusable felt poinsettia blooms for a splash of color.

Coastside Holidays

Growing up in South Africa, we never had snow or real Christmas trees during the holidays. The southern hemisphere enjoys a good barbeque and maybe even a dip in the pool at that time. I had my fair share of snowy holidays (beautiful and cozy but often messy and inconvenient) when I lived in New York but nothing beats the mild climate we enjoy today in the San Francisco Bay Area. There's a little chill in the air (and lately a good deal of rain, too) but you can always take a stroll on the beach to unwind. Here are some of my recent winter coastal images from the area.

Holidays the Flora Grubb Way

Flora Grubb Gardens is my favorite nursery/gift shop in San Francisco. I love succulents and they excel at displaying them in creative ways. Wreaths containing succulents, mosses and tillandsia are a lovely alternative to traditional holiday wreaths, don't you think?

This tillandsia (air plant) tree ornament is so unique and refreshing. They also carry a number of other aeriums and air plant vessels in glass and wood. These little plants make fantastic low-maintenance gifts.

I love the idea of this installation they had at the nursery. It's a sculpture imagined as a habitat for bugs created by artist Kevin Smith (with inspiration from Lisa Lee Benjamin of Urban Hedgrow). It contains salvaged and natural materials and is designed to sustain a flow of wild visitors, making a garden more alive with birdsong. I love all the textures and patterns.

The best news is that Flora Grubb Gardens recently opened a web shop so folks anywhere can enjoy their natural creations. There really is no substitute, however, for visiting the lush nursery in person and browsing their unique, earth-friendly gift store while enjoying a fresh cup of Ritual coffee. Mmmm...

New Calendars in the Leefee Shop

I've just added two 5"x7" calendars (12 photo paper pages with a lustre finish) to the Leefee shop - available for a limited time only. Sausalito Serenity

My husband and I like to take frequent day trips to nearby towns and explore the side streets and neighborhoods that the tourists don't seem to seek out. One of our favorite places for a morning stroll is Sausalito, a beautiful waterfront town in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Recently, we grabbed a warm drink and pastry and went out to a little park on the water to watch the sailboats for a while (great view of San Francisco!) before heading up into the hills to explore a sweet neighborhood behind the main street. Isn't this cottage adorable?

"O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo!" is what I half expected to hear when we came across this lovely, unexpected (and enormous) home. Gorgeous details.

There's always an abundance of beautiful vintage cars scattered around town. I love old cars!

I really appreciate seeing aesthetically pleasing small businesses and this town doesn't disappoint.

I'm a sucker for flower shops and nurseries - Sausalito has two (!) lovely florists on the main street. Seeing all this botanical goodness on a sunny morning makes me giddy and thankful.

The population of Sausalito is clearly on the wealthier side of life but for the price of a small breakfast and a bit of gas, you can still enjoy everything towns like this have to offer. One can always take comfort in simple pleasures, no matter where you find yourself.

Photography Inspiration: Tabi**chu on Flickr

Since the purchase of my beloved Yashica Mat 124G, I am always on the lookout for vintage film camera inspiration from fellow Flickr members. I was fortunate to discover Mami (Tabi**chu on Flickr), a lovely and talented Japanese photographer living in Prague (and making frequent trips to France - lucky!) with her partner and her adorable little chihuahua, Tabi.

Mami has a soulful way of looking at the world. Even her descriptions of her photographs say a lot about her warm, thoughtful spirit. She shoots primarily in film and owns an assortment of vintage film cameras. She has only recently begun using this format but is clearly already very skilled. There is a magical mood in her images - I love the quality of the light and her frequent use of shallow depth of field. Aren't these images perfect?

Mami is truly inspiring and I hope you will visit her photostream to see more of her delightful work. It is still a marvel to me that we are able to access all of this creative abundance on sites like Flickr with a few quick keystrokes. The skill of others can move us to push ourselves to learn more and hopefully make beautiful, more meaningful, contemplative creations.

Yosemite in November

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life. ~ John Muir

Northern California is a true wilderness lover's paradise. With countless parks to choose from, one can enjoy a complete recharge on the cheap. We were very fortunate to spend a few days in Yosemite National Park. Visiting in the off-season ensures an uninterrupted connection to nature. We also don't mind a bit of cold. We loved the beautiful autumn colors and the snow at higher elevations.

We meandered through the park for hours but didn't do much strenuous hiking until our last day there. We visited the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias where we took an unpaved hiking trail to the Wawona Point summit (6810 feet!) - me, half grumbling and dragging my behind on the way up in my pregnant state. Near the top, we came across a winter wonderland which we had all to ourselves (apparently many folks don't make it past the few sequoias near the parking lot before leaving (for shame!). It was a real gift. I think we may have found a new family tradition.

A New Adventure

I've been awfully sluggish for the past couple of months - and very lax on the blog posting. The reason? I am very fortunate to be expecting our first baby. It is both thrilling and terrifying all at once. It will be the most difficult job I have ever had, and surely the most rewarding.

My path to embracing motherhood was not a simple one. I am a classic "overthinker" and "worrrier". For a long time, I struggled with the idea of bringing another human being to this world. Many people enter into this enormous undertaking without much forethought. Sure, they can get by just fine in many cases. For me, it is not something that should be taken lightly - at the very least, your ability to afford a new family member should be considered. I thought seriously about every aspect of this responsibility. My new and continually growing awareness of our impact on the planet and the harm we've already done was also influencing my outlook on motherhood. After much soul-searching, my husband and I emerged with several reasons for moving forward with it and I have embraced this gift wholeheartedly. I hope to raise a child that will tread lightly, spread kindness and enrich our world in immeasurable ways.

After weeks of nausea and general inclination toward being horizontal, I'm in the much-loved second trimester and my energy levels are back to normal. It was sheer delight to see my little plum bouncing around during a recent ultrasound, its little facial features already so defined. I hope to post on the blog more regularly now - don't worry, it won't turn into a maternity blog! I have many creative and inspirational finds to share with you in the coming weeks.

Irene Suchocki: These lovely prints from one of my favorite photographers are the perfect start to creating your sanctuary at home. They're so serene and I love the vintage feel. They also fit perfectly in the standard square IKEA Ribba frames. So easy!

Tush Tush: After discovering Tali's shop a few months ago, I frequently return to see what's new. Her work is so soulful and I love the movement and texture in each piece. These are tiny canvas prints. Her work is perfect for collecting and creating an art wall.

Uncommon: Vincent and Jessie design lovely, modern clocks and other decorative items. I fell in love with the shape and color of this piece.

Petit Collage: Lorena Siminovich's children's book illustration is adorable. In her Etsy shop, she sells beautiful posters, bamboo mobiles and many pieces like this one that is printed onto a delicate maple veneer. Her Bird Trio mobile is on my wish list.

Fruits of Summer

The Bay Area has been a bit cooler than usual this Summer but the last couple of days have been positively scorching! Feeling awfully lethargic today but wanted to share some images of the fruit trees I've noticed on our walks recently. This cherry tree brought a smile to my face. So lovely.

And these little neighborhood apples look delicious, don't they?

Here's a recent Polaroid of our beloved lemon tree. We have lemons all year long!

Fruit trees represent growth, productivity (and creativity!), abundance, and renewed hope for me. Have you been productive this Summer? What were your "fruits"? Did you do something good, memorable, or that you're proud of? I witnessed something awful that turned out to be really life-affirming; I accomplished a few things I'm pleased with, did loads of thinking, some growing up, a fair amount of relaxing, and general making of plans for the future. I'd call it pretty fruitful...

Local Love

Have you taken a moment lately to think about how much the small businesses in your area contribute to the vitality and well-being of your community? It can't be easy staying afloat in these difficult times but many business owners really add a positive feel to their neighborhoods, consistently maintaining their appearance and displaying their wares/services in unique and inviting ways. You can't ignore the fact that seeing a street of beautiful, clean businesses lifts the spirits. Aesthetics really do matter. I try to do my best to return the favor by shopping locally when I can. I'm sharing some images of details of local businesses that caught my eye.

And finally, a collection of doors - the first is actually covering a window of a business. Beautiful, isn't it? The second is a kitchen door to a restaurant. Isn't that wreath (last image) pretty?

Mina Barker's First Birthday

My sidekick, Mina is a rescue mutt. We adopted her when she was around ten weeks old so she was born around this time last year. She's been a real gift in our lives. Anyone who works from home will know how solitary and quiet the day can be. Mina keeps things interesting for me and forces me to take breaks and enjoy the day. She can also be incredibly naughty until she gets her exercise, and her antics often disarm me and I chuckle in surrender when she has exhausted my patience. Here she is in her first week with us (after her first vet visit, where she got the bandana she's sporting).

And here she is all grown up...

In this week's Sunday paper, I read about Jonny, a pit bull seized from the Bad Newz Kennels owned by Michael Vick when it was discovered that he was running a dog fighting ring. Wonderful judge Henry E. Hudson ordered $1 Million to be spent on the rehabilitation of Vick's dogs. Jonny "spent his entire life either locked up in a pen or chained to a rotating axle in the woods, with little or no positive interaction with people or other dogs" and actually became a therapy dog! Dogs continue to amaze me in their capacity to love, learn, and forgive. If you're a rescue dog owner - yay - you're awesome! If you're thinking of going out to a breeder and spending thousands of dollars for a pup (I hope you'll never consider a pet store/puppy mill purchase - people who run these kinds of operations are cruel, sick and greedy), take some time to consider a shelter/rescue pet. Thousands need your help - there are too many great animals in the shelter system right now.

As for Mina, she's just beginning her journey with us and will always be a treasured member of our family. Happy birthday, little girl. You are so loved. x

This is one of my favorite poems. My husband first shared it with me years ago and I return to it often to remind myself to live with purpose (and often with abandon - it's really important to laugh, be idle and wander). Setting new goals and reaching them, making the most of my time and making the days matter, appreciating the people in my life, helping to protect and nurture this beautiful planet, and letting go of petty concerns - this poem begs me to do all of these. A peak inside my first group show

Just over 60 artists are exhibiting their work at the Sanchez Art Center (in the San Francisco Bay Area) until the end of August. I am proud to be participating in the show - my first ever. Marian Parmenter of SFMOMA Artists Gallery selected the exhibiting artists. This show was an incredible learning experience for me and I've met so many folks whom I really admire. Here's a look at my little corner of the show and the last day of mounting our work in the galleries.

And below, a couple of snapshots of the ticketed preview fundraiser night. So much to see - so much creativity! There are two wings of the building to visit and several gallery spaces. I have to go back a couple of times to take it all in properly. My fellow artists are really stellar and working in every medium imaginable. If you're in the Bay Area, come on by. The exhibition is free and the galleries are open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm until August 29th.

Renegade & Poster Love

This weekend I visited the Renegade Craft Fair at the Fort Mason Center on the waterfront in San Francisco. Dozens of talented crafters and artists showed off their beautiful wares for hundreds of visitors from around the Bay Area. What impressed me most about the fair is actually more techie than artsy. I can't believe how iPhones and iPads have changed the way indy vendors do business. The technology available to them now is extraordinary. Instead of getting worried about hitting an ATM before going anywhere near an outdoor art fair or farmer's market, shoppers can use their credit cards at the smallest of vendors who are equipped with an iPhone or iPad using new apps and gadgets like these card readers from Square and Swipe It. This is all mind blowing to me! When I first saw the tiny white swipe square (attached to an iPad) in action, I couldn't wipe the curious and excited smile off my face - and the vendors were all too happy to show it off. It makes everyone's lives so much easier! Technology is awesome! You really can take your business anywhere now.

My favorite exhibitors at this show were the poster vendors. Here's a peak at the Poster List booth and below that a shot of the DKNG booth. You really can decorate your entire home with posters and there are so many talented folks producing amazing work.

Other great teams at the show included The Small Stakes (below), GigArt (Josh Ritter poster - love!), and Cinqunquatre (featuring the work of Alice Jarry).

Half Moon Bay

My husband and I frequently take a short ride to Half Moon Bay, a small and adorable town in the Bay Area. The town boasts a wonderful coastal trail that connects all the local beaches. This sweet ocean view trail is paved and well maintained so you'll always find walkers, runners, cyclists and surfers on your way. I wanted to share some of the things I love about this trail - homes around the trail and the natural goodness that makes this walk extra special for us. This view doesn't suck, does it?

Can you see yourself having a refreshing drink in this little unpretentious outdoor sitting area below? I always notice homes with drought tolerant landscaping and I love the natural sculpture in front of the home shown in the second image below. The next home has a completely unobstructed view of the ocean. Notice the very tempting hammock. Yes, please.

The Sun Center for Well Being, also right on the beach, has the most interesting, creative facade. The gardens instantly lower your blood pressure. This sculpture adorned with succulent plants is located at the entrance to the building. I also noticed a beautiful natural wood succulent holder hanging on their garden gate.

And here's a look at the natural side of things in HMB. Starting with the surfer twins. Go girls!

Sizzlin' Succulents

My 'Rosettes in Green' photograph (above) appeared on Poppytalk recently as part of the Green Day post for Summer Colors Week. It is also currently featured on Art Wall. This image gets so much more attention than anything else I've photographed so far and I suppose I can understand why. Succulents are strikingly beautiful and modern-looking plants. Their geometry draws you in. They are really commonly used plants in California because they are so hardy and drought tolerant (a fantastic way to save water in your garden!). Succulent motifs are also popping up everywhere in textiles, home accessories and paper products.

I love to visit Flora Grubb in San Francisco to see their breathtaking vertical succulent gardens and huge selection of succulents for sale - this place is a wonderland for the decor-loving succulent enthusiast. They really know how to make gardens look spectacular and modern. I have several of these robust little plants in my home and love that you can travel without worrying about them dying on you - they're so low maintenance. Little Boxes

Midcentury modern is alive and well in the San Francisco Bay Area. I took a walk in Daly City recently and photographed these brightly-colored "boxes". The homes remind me a bit of the set of Edward Scissorhands. Filmed in Florida, production designer Bo Welch said he wanted "a kind of generic, plain-wrap suburb, which we made even more characterless by painting all the houses in faded pastels". He described the colors he used to paint the houses as "sea-foam green, dirty flesh, butter and dirty blue". I think these homes have a certain charm and the colors instantly uplift the spirits - not sure I would call them "characterless". One of my favorite artists, Leah Giberson, enjoys using homes like these as inspiration for many of her pieces.

Photography Inspiration: Aya Brackett

One of my favorite photographers and true inspiration is California artist, Aya Brackett. Raised in a traditional Japanese home in the mountains, Aya studied painting as a child. This surely influences the beautiful painterly light in her work. She composes and styles many of her images with the hand of a still life painter. Aya worked as a photo editor at Dwell Magazine for several years and contributed her own photography and styled food and props for many shoots. Her choices in lighting and composition really draw me in. Here are a few of my favorite pieces from Aya's fantastic portfolio.

A Date With Nature

After too many hours spent at my desk last week, I was starting to suffer from nature deficit disorder. ;) My sweety and I went for a hike at a nearby county park and I snapped a few photographs to share with you. The dogwood trees were in bloom!

I'm including the image below because we inevitably encounter mindless littering everywhere we go hiking. Yes, it is all about "YOU", isn't it? The society of ME and custom made everything for the singular individual also produces some really disrespectful and selfish humans that really don't deserve to enjoy nature. If I sound like a crazy woman, then you're probably one of these people. Now you know, eh? That's my social commentary for the day, then. Happy Monday!

Katie Stephenson's beautiful site, Art Wall is a curated online exhibition space. The concept is whimsical and unique - the site consists of several "rooms" in a virtual home. The rooms are illustrated by the talented, Jessica Swift. Layered over the illustrated frames in each room are Katie's delightful art picks. I'm pleased to have two of my photographs featured in the "Porch" room. I've always thought about having a screened in porch with painted wooden floors, shabby chic furniture (including a swing chair for lazy afternoons curled up with a book and glass of iced tea), and a collection of my favorite art and plants. Dreamy.

A Broken Heart

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a Nature Conservationist (or Park Ranger, as you would call it here). In my home continent of Africa, there would be no shortage of creatures to protect. I would pore over glossy books about African animals for hours. The Arts got the better of me as I got older but my deep love of nature has never left.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has had devastating effects on the surrounding communities. Although I feel sincere empathy for the human beings affected, I cannot help but feel so much more horror for the tragedy that has struck the Gulf's ocean life - fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, invertebrates, coral reefs. All innocent victims in this disaster.

It's easy to sit back and blame a company, a government, a network of greedy people but we all support oil in our daily lives and are also responsible. Most of us now feel helpless to make a difference but we can start by demanding alternative, clean fuels that will save our planet for our children. There are dozens of other things you can do, choices you can make every day that make a statement about what our future should look like. Can any parent ignore this horrific event and stand by without demanding change? And why would anyone not want to make changes in their own lives in support of our earth? Because it's not convenient? Our culture has become so centered around Self - we need a shift toward giving and thinking of others (kindness and good manners are a great start!), and truly consider how our actions affect other people - and just as importantly, other living things.

In a few days, I will be donating every penny of profit from my Etsy shop sales to the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental non-profit that has been doing amazing work on our behalf on the legal front - they don't offer gimmicks and free stuffed toys for your donation - it's all about using your gifts to effect real change, including significant wins to prevent oil drilling in the Arctic. I will also be donating to Friends of the Earth. Several new photographs (and specially priced sets) will be added to the shop for this event which will run for about a week (extension probable). In the meantime, you can show your support for the relief effort at the newly-formed Etsy shop, Help the Gulf Coast, which features donated items from Etsy sellers (my Jelly in Sepia is available there) and free shipping. All proceeds go to the Audubon Society and Oxfam America.

Let today be a day of gratitude, of reflection on the the loss of our fellow creatures, and of getting MAD! Mad enough to make change happen. Make your promise to move forward with a sustained passion to heal our beautiful, struggling planet.

Lovely Clusters catalog - Leefee on the cover!

The first ever Lovely Clusters catalog was unveiled today. I was surprised to see my 'Spring in the Garden' photograph featured on the cover! My First Group Show

I've been selected to participate in the second annual 50-50 Show at the Sanchez Art Center in California. Marian Parmenter, co-founder of the SFMOMA Artists Gallery in San Francisco, served as juror. Each artist has to produce 50 artworks in 50 days. All pieces will be mounted on 6"x6" boards. Production is in full swing and I'm working really hard. It's an interesting challenge and I can't wait to see everyone's work. If you're in the Bay Area and would like to stop by, the exhibition opens on July 30th and closes August 29th. I will be posting some of my new work for the exhibition on the blog but you can view everything on Flickr around mid-July. My chosen theme is Everyday Wonders: California Through the Viewfinder. It will be an homage to vintage film cameras and film processing, and also feature some 'through the viewfinder' pieces, of course. Yay! First show!

Tag! You're It!: Mengsel Studio

Tania of Indobay came up with the very pay-it-forward and fun idea of blogging about fellow Papernstitch sellers to help get the word out about the talented folks being featured there. If someone tags you, you get a feature on their blog and then it's your turn to do the same for a seller you admire. My work was featured yesterday on A Quick Study (thank you!) written by Zoe (she has a delightful paper goods shop). When I realized I would have to relay the goodness, I quickly decided on a fellow South African expat, Luzelle van der Westhuizen and her beautiful shop, Mengsel.

I'm so smitten with every item she creates. Inspired by African and Scandinavian design, her illustration style is really vibrant and modern, with the right amount of whimsy. My love of children's book illustration keeps me searching the web for new eye candy on a regular basis. Mengsel doesn't disappoint. Art merges with function in her line of silkscreen printed tea towels, cushions and pillow covers, and her bold paper prints are getting loads of attention, too.

Luzelle has an interesting background in the arts. Trained as a jewelry designer in South Africa, she moved to London and after working for other designers, decided to open her own studio. We're so happy she did. It's wonderful to see the trajectory that artists take. I have yet to meet an artist/designer whom I believe can only do one creative thing. Creative folk are constantly growing and seeking new challenges.

Portrait photography appreciation

I am not ready to delve into wedding and portrait photography - maybe some day - so I am in awe of the amazing work out there. I aspire to be like these artists "when I grow up". It takes great talent, patience, stamina and personality, I'm sure. I wanted to share a few examples of the type of work I really enjoy. Adding a vintage feel to a modern photograph is very popular now. I love the warm tones. Natural/outdoor lighting is always beautiful and authentic.

The importance of having at least a few beautiful photographs of your little ones, yourself (this is not vanity - it will mean so much to those you love) or a special event is not lost on me. Our parents didn't have many photographs of us and as I get older, capturing these special family memories seems priceless. These photographers are giving families a gift that will last a lifetime.

Cape Town Love

My home country of South Africa is set to host the FIFA World Cup soon. I'm sort of mourning the fact that so many will now discover that beautiful place - our little hidden treasure. I hope the country's new visitors will tread lightly and enjoy every moment. It is still a fragile country, politically and economically - it needs continued growth, so I hope there won't be any incidents that cast a shadow on the progress made. If you're in South Africa, you will not want to miss Cape Town. This fantastic city is a cultural hub that is also breathtakingly beautiful. While browsing the National Geographic web site recently (surely the best out there for learning about our planet and finding photography inspiration), I found these images of the Cape Town area. There are many on the site but these stood out for me - the colors are invigorating.

J.Crew at it again...

The folks at J.Crew are so creative. I love the new behind-the-scenes intro on their website. It features a number of polaroids and sketches in a moleskin notebook layout (I'm partial to this technique and used a similar layout on my website homepage) detailing their catalog shoot in Turks & Caicos. I've been to T&C and it is so pristine and stunningly beautiful. These "intros" seem to change regularly so I captured some of them here for future inspiration.

Inspired by Tina and Imogen

A couple of my favorite female photographers are Tina Modotti and Imogen Cunningham. I wanted to showcase some of their photographs here. We often mimic our mentors while we find our own voice. I've become more aware of their influence as I continue to experiment. In my next blog entry, I'll post some of my own black and white work that is most certainly inspired by these talented pioneers.

Lovely Italian, Tina Modotti was an actress before embarking on her photographic career. She was a revolutionary and activist in Mexico (although she lived in San Francisco for many years), rubbing elbows with the likes Diego Rivera and Edward Weston, for whom she was a frequent model. She was very passionate about communism and the people of rural Mexico. Madonna is an avid collector of Modotti's work (who knew!).

Modotti led such an interesting life (I recommend reading her biography, Shadows, Fire, Snow: The Life of Tina Modotti by Patricia Albers) and I'm so enamored of the simplicity and pattern in her work.

Imogen Cunningham also spent many years in San Francisco. She also crossed paths with Edward Weston (not in the passionate way Tina did!) and other greats like Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lange. Her botanical work is just stunning. She produced formidable work in portraiture (including her work for Vanity Fair), documentary street photography and industrial landscapes as well. Cunningham had a true understanding of photographic chemistry - her technical prowess is so inspiring in this age of point-and-click.

Seed

While visiting LA, we stopped in at Seed (in Venice) for a yummy lunch. I wish we had an abundance of restaurants like this in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's organic, vegan, macrobiotic fast food - and it tastes amazing! I think I see a need and a niche, people - let's open more of these places. America is struggling with obesity and all its related illnesses. We all need to think seriously about joining the "food revolution" and choose to eat more healthily for ourselves and for our planet. While sitting down to my delicious lunch, I snapped a few shots of a sweet display of dried botanicals on their walls.

A Happy Reunion

My husband and I just returned from a road trip to Los Angeles. We saw many interesting, new things but (no offense to LA area residents), we won't be returning anytime soon. I'm happy we had the opportunity to see a new place but even happier to return to Northern California. Life here is a little slower and far less congested - more our speed. No shortage of bad typography, noise or air pollution in our beloved Tinseltown. I think I was in the car a lot longer than I was on land! After living in New York for so many years, I also can't help but compare every other city to it. NYC still gets my vote for most interesting and accessible. My favorite LA spots were nature or seaside locations (parks and beaches - throw in a few museums) and while most people enjoy people-watching, crowds tend to chip away at my zen rather quickly so the weekend beach scene quickly turned into an exploration of the nearby neighborhoods. Portuguese Tile Art

Portugal is still on my mind. In a previous post I mentioned that my parents are Portuguese and that I lived in Lisbon for a few years as a child. Lisbon is definitely at the top of our list for our next European trip. The city was featured recently in the San Francisco Chronicle (read the feature here, if you're curious).

I love the amazing tile art all over Portugal. The courtyard pictured above can be found at the Portuguese Tile Museum - a bit like Morocco, no? Portuguese tile art and architecture was influenced by other civilizations and cultures (in particular, the Moors and Spaniards). You can find brilliant examples of azulejos in Lisbon as well as some fascinating tile murals. I discovered a photographer on Flickr - Jaime Silva - who travels all over Europe (wonderful photographer!) and has documented a plethora of fantastic examples of this decorative art form in Portugal. I'm sharing them here. Don't you love these beautiful windows and murals?

Paper Art: Breathtaking Work by Helen Musselwhite

Have you heard of Helen? This brilliant UK-based artist produces such striking work. Her art is so connected to nature, and the texture and color in every piece is perfectly selected. I'm drawn to the folktale or fairytale aspect of her art - yet it is also very modern. She loves owls, birds and other assorted critters which makes her an instant favorite of mine.

Helen's three-dimensional paper vignettes are not only wall-mounted but also displayed in glass jars (see image below) like slices of nature trapped in time. I think it would be likely that if I owned one of these lovely pieces, I would have to stare at it - hypnotized - every day.

In a Room

As a new Etsy seller, I'm still trying to get a grasp on the best ways to get the word out about my work. It's incredibly easy to get lost in the shuffle on Etsy, isn't it? There are so many sellers out there and so many amazing talents - how would anyone find my shop, right? I try to look at things from the perspective of a buyer. I imagine that buyers like to see your work in an actual room. I place an image of my work in a frame for each listing but I'm sure a full room view would help tremendously. Since I'm just starting out and don't have the resources to produce an elaborate shoot of my work in my fancy (not!) home, I've been experimenting with a few images by some of my favorite real-life homes featured on Apartment Therapy (love!) and even Pottery Barn images (I covet their frames and their catalog images are always beautifully styled). So I've layered my photographs over the images of these lovely rooms - just for fun.

To begin with, I placed my Jelly in Sepia (left frame) over a photograph by Todd Selby for Cole Haan.

Next, I placed Paris in Love in this image from Alison and Jeff's sweet house in Minneapolis.

I was inspired by Becke and Lee's home in Ontario. I placed Portland Crow in the frame on their mantel and I think Lonely Cow would look fantastic in their kitchen. I like the black and white theme and have always fancied checkered floors.

In this Pottery Barn catalog image, I used Burrowing Owl in the center and Weathered at bottom right.

...and below, Hello Deer in the center (image also from Pottery Barn).

And finally in the center row (top to bottom), I placed White Blossoms, Folklore and Weathered over the PB catalog image.

What do you think? Now I'm inspired to go out and produce some real interior shots of my work in beautiful living (and work!) spaces.

California Dreamin'

I thank my lucky stars every day for the gift of living in California. Sure, there are plenty of problems here as there are everywhere else but at the end of the day, you're surrounded by so much beauty, sunshine and open space. This is something I never take for granted. I miss the snow (a little - let's not get carried away) and the museums in New York (where I lived for almost 12 years) but my quality of life has improved so much in the sunshine state. Surfers, movie stars, sunglasses, convertibles - it's the Cali everyone knows about, but what mesmerizes me is the California that Ansel Adams loved. Natural California is breathtaking. Living in our little Pacific coast town feels like we're at the edge of the world - the ocean vistas offer the most calming, spiritual respite from the chaos of life. Wherever you are, take solace in the little things and the natural gifts that surround you. The best things in life really are free.

Small changes in our lifestyles can make an enormous impact on our planet. Earth Hour represents this collaborative effort and the power of coming together to effect positive change. Love it. Timeless, unfussy, comfortable classic style. When posed in Paris, does every woman look a little more feminine or is that an optical illusion? Cigarettes aren't my thing but I can't say she doesn't look more mysterious holding them. This woman is a style inspiration. I'll be featuring more of my classy faves in future. Merci, Sofia. Nancy's Apartment

I had the pleasure of visiting the new home of my good friend Nancy this weekend. She has a lovely apartment in Oakland. It's filled with light and lots of character. I had to share some of the images I took of the beautiful botanical arrangements she had all over her home. She is a natural born stylist - always notices details and enjoys good design. Nancy knows how to bring the outside in - but you'll never see carnations or baby's breath here - she always picks unique plants and prepares interesting groupings. Enjoy this peak inside her home. Relaxation Inspiration

Take a good look at this image - isn't it dreamy? The tub caddy featured is made of reclaimed oak from an old hardware store. I noticed it recently on the sweet Etsy shop, Peg and Awl (based in Philadelphia) which carries many other creative items made of recycled/repurposed materials. This particular image got me thinking in the last few days. Do you ever feel like you're taking yourself for granted? Just getting through your daily routine without taking time to enjoy something purely for your own pleasure and to be nice to yourself? It can be as simple as taking a calming bath. A cup of tea, a journal entry, a short story or poem, a few candles and maybe some of your favorite tunes in the background? When I stop to pamper myself a little, I find that I am able to give so much more to others. Will you be nice to yourself this weekend?

Getting Lost: Paris

Ever take a walk in a new city and get lost for the heck of it? The best part of my last trip to Paris was taking really long walks with my best friend (husband) and going down random streets without consulting maps and guidebooks. To me, everything about the City of Lights is interesting and every turn produced what I referred to as "another postcard view". In Montmartre, we stumbled upon a place that used to be Picasso's studio! Even the decay and wear on this old city is beautiful. Oh, to be able to take a stroll there right now...(sigh)

Man's Best Friend

Our pup, Mina is now six months old and I'm just in love with her. She's named after Mina Murray (Harker) in Bram Stoker's Dracula. We call her Mina Barker. I spend most of my day around her and still can't get enough of her. She's a shelter pup - a summa (some o' this and some o' that). I was waiting outside a little restaurant in San Francisco recently and a young man asked me what kind of dog she is. Yadda yadda, and he ends with, "She's a cute dog, for a shelter dog". Hey mister, she's cute, period. And shelter pets are just as wonderful as every pure bred pup out there. Don't know about you, but what I love most about our furry companions is the fact that they think you're the most amazing, beautiful, interesting person ever. They don't care what you do for a living, how much money you make, what you've done - good or bad. A dog is your most accepting friend and no matter how hard your human friends try, they cannot be as infallible as your canine friends. I cringe in disbelief and horror when I see shows like Animal Precinct. What sort of disgusting human can mistreat these loyal creatures? If you're thinking of getting a pet, please consider a shelter pet - they need your help and they can give you so much in return.

Portugal Love

These days I've been thinking about my family and roots more than ever. I was born in Africa but lived in Lisbon, Portugal for about 5 years (my sisters were born there and my parents are both Portuguese). If you love Paris, you have to love Lisbon. There is so much history there and the older parts of town are paved in cobblestone - the kind of place you want to feature in catalogs, as did J.Crew for their latest spread. The photographs in the catalog are lovely and make me want to return to Portugal soon, but their site (until recently) also featured some interesting tidbits about Portuguese culture - so creative!

And thanks to Google, I am able to get a street view of the block we lived on in Lisbon! Doesn't technology amaze you sometimes? Adeus! Click on the images to enlarge them.

Bright Star

I finally had the chance to see Jane Campion's lovely film, Bright Star. The performances and costumes were wonderful but the thing I loved most about this film is the light! You could turn the sound off and simply watch every scene go by like a visual poem. These images appear on the film's web site. Just look at all that delicate texture and soft light.

The talented cinematographer, Greig Fraser, posted some photographs he took in pre-production. I'm highlighting a few of my favorites below. Click on the images to see larger versions and enjoy...

After the Rain

It's been raining almost non-stop for the last couple of weeks in our little corner of the world. Always a blessing to get rain in our region but after a few days of it, I must admit, I start getting a bit of cabin fever. So when the sun popped out for a couple of hours, I took a soothing walk with my dog and snapped a few signs of life. This brave little guy was moving along very slowly.

And all sorts of mushrooms grew almost overnight. Oh, and the smell of fresh rain on soil and plants is simply delicious, isn't it? Wishing you a day of gratitude for all things tiny.

Alice Melvin

Last month I treated myself to a book by the talented Scottish illustrator, Alice Melvin. It is a children's book - and I'm sorry to be going on about birds but it features birds on every page! I just love how Alice created little vignettes featuring various birds. Here's a quick peak at a couple of pages.

Alice also sells a lovely screen printed poster which I framed and hung above my desk in my office. Love it! It's called Alice's Aviary and you can see it up close in her shop.

Birdy Love

I really love all things bird and the latest Pottery Barn catalog featured a number of pillows that I think are so sweet. I'm a huge fan of bringing the outside in when decorating.

And this embroidered botanical pillow also caught my eye.

I recently purchased a birdy pillow (pictured below) from Etsy seller, Joom based in San Francisco. She sells lovely goodies for anyone interested in botanical and nature themed home decor.

Pleased to meet you...

This blog is a companion to my web site, Leefee.com. I wanted to be able to share more of myself with folks that enjoy my work. The blog will not be a journal as I'm quite a private person but I hope to draw attention to things that delight, surprise, and fill me with gratitude. Lately, I've been learning more about the impact of human actions on the planet and will likely share my interest in green living with you, on occasion. I am a creative person and my greatest inspiration is nature. I was born and raised in Africa, where my love for nature began, but now have many opportunities to appreciate flora and fauna in my home state of California. My photographic subjects are mostly Californian but my trusty camera is also very busy when I travel. My work often seems solitary and quiet - this is the imagery that calms me and helps me to remember to take deep breaths and enjoy! I hope it does the same for you.
